“Scavenges, Time-travels, and Scrapbooks” contains various pieces created out of gathered matter from notebooks, phone recordings, and computer sketches piling up along the way of a few years, across a few locations.

The album opens on “Painkiller II”, second version of the very first Purpur Spytt’s song, a cathartic spit that turned into a mellow statement. “On a Circle” invites you to reflect on rainy days. Speaking of the weather, “Out” points through the window. “Luggage in the Stairs” questions the immaterial heritage. “Heatwave” talks about our fucked up world and opens a floor to dance on it. “A Mechanism” is a smoky thought on human behaviors and their origins. “Get Out” points to the door now. “Freewheeling” is basically about indoor cycling in the mud. “Announcement” points to the head. “Trapped” mocks the most terrible feeling. “The Circumstances” is the last Staches song that never got recorded and it laughs about confusing the context for an excuse. “Go Outside” kicks your butt out now, last reminder to get out of your head sometimes. As a closure, “Party Town” describes a long and laborious attempt to exit the party zone.

Review from Alioss, rapper:

“Purpur Spytt’s new album “Scavenges, Time Travels and Scrapbooks” paints an otherworldly but not uncomfortable soundscape. Managing to bring together, and make coherent, snapshots sometimes taken years and many kilometers apart, at times the album feels like being a fly on the wall in the intimacy of a friend’s room, watching her purposefully moving about, humming, whispering, singing and talking to all the versions of herself floating around. At others it hits like an alien circus, landing in the desert to set up a marquee, all flashing coloured lights, bewitched dancing rattlesnakes and eerie music coming from the air itself.

The pieces are like the intricately crafted mobiles of an artist fully in control of her trade, they’re made of crystal and voice, precise, crispy drums, extraterrestrial synth and, of course, her skillful and often playful bass. They well up and fade as you move through the album, they take you for a spin and leave you abruptly, like abandonment, craving more. The play between softness, silence and post-punk bangers is masterful.

All in all, a surprising, rich and subtle trip overlaid with Purpur Spytt’s deadpan, at times dragging, delivery of no-nonsense lyrics, pretty harmonies and her signature humor.

Lest we’d forgotten, this new installment reminds us that Purpur Spytt has kept on deftly doing her own thing and she’s having none of anyone’s bullshit.”

about

Purpur Spytt Geneva, Switzerland

Purpur Spytt performs as a one-woman band, even though she might not be all alone in her head… she plays some wavy pop-ish post-punk with lots of bass lines and very few guitar chords. Ironic, not to say satirical, her lyrics are loaded with existential meanings, not to say statements. You know what we say ; better to laugh…

Purpur Spytt is a fictional character created by Charlotte Mermoud.
